It's important to know that MIDI files reproduce sounds created with a computer program that tries to imitate musical instruments. When you first hear you may find midi-files a bit disappointing as the quality is not the same of a musical instrument.

No doubt, they can't replace a proper recording or a live performance. However, with MIDI-files, you can create sound files of music pieces for which thee is no existing recording, or to reconstruct works, or they are good to get a first impression of how a piece of music sounds like. It's a good way to start.
