Baerenreiter
editions are a German publisher, based in Kassel, one of the biggest
classical music publishers in the world. It was founded in 1923 by Karl Vötterle, starting small, publishing
pieces for recorder and organ, music by Heinrich Schütz (who was at
that time getting rediscovered) and with the big project of publishing
the complete works
of Bach, Handel, Schubert in critical editions that was as much
faithful as possible to the composer's intentions.
These are the
so-called Urtext editions.
To perform this task, a publisher (or rather, its editor) has to study,
analyze and compare autograph manuscripts (if existing) and copies,
first editions, to correct possible mistakes passed on over the years.
Baerenreiter Urtext editions
So, this is Baerenreiter's main characteristic: now they publish Urtext editions
for a huge number of works, including Beethoven symphonies, and the
complete works of many composers, among which the most famous are:
Georg Philipp Telemann,
Jean-Philippe Rameau, Johann Sebastian Bach,
Gabriel Fauré, Georg Friedrich
Händel, Christoph Willibald Gluck, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Franz Schubert, Hector Berlioz, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Sergei
Rachmaninoff, Leos Janacek.
They also partly own Editio
Baerenreiter Praha that publish music by Czech and Slovak
composers, like Dvorak,
Smetana, Martinu.
With the publisher Metzler they also publish and sell the musicencyclopedia MGG, or Die Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart, (Music
in the Past and the Present) in 29 volumes. Together with the Grove
Dictionary of Music and Musicians, it is the most comprehensive encyclopedia of
western music in
the world. The only problem (at least for me) is that it's in German,
so I cannot read it! (yet, maybe).
They have been incorporating other publishers over the years. During
World War II they opened a branch in Basel, Switzerland and later the
premises in Kassel were destroyed by an air raid. Now they have offices
in New York, Paris, Praha, UK. Baerenreiter also publish music books,
educational and contemporary music.
Baerenreiter editions
for viola include works by J. S. Bach, Georg Philipp Telemann, Mozart, Hector Berlioz, Franz Schubert, Bohuslav Martinu, Jan Krtitel Vanhal, the wonderful quartet From
My Life by Bedrich Smetana
and
many more, collections of solos for viola and piano of
various genres and difficulty, as well as scales and studies books.
